With a fantastic cycling weather the start took place at 09.30 o’clock in Lienz. This year there was a „Time Out Strecke“ in the Lesachtal, because the actual main road wasn’t able to ride. On the bypass you had to complete on a gravel road, which was why the time was temporarily stopped for safety reasons.
The first flat section of the race was slow, till the attacks started at the Gailtalsattel. The pace increased, which formed a top group of about 10 riders. At the beginning I managed all attacks. During that I remembered that this was my first race this season. I didn’t want to ride over my limit at the first climb, so I opened a gap at the end of the Gailtalsattel. My plan was that I will close the gap in the descent which succeeded. I felt good when we rode (about 12 riders) into the Lesachtal. The speed raised again, but I rode my own rhythm. Two others riders joined my journey. Suddenly I got shifting problems, which irritated but didn’t bother me. I only thought more when the rear derailleur stopped moving. It was about 5km, with 30 crank turns per minute away from to the „Time Out Strecke“. Fortunately, I lost no time while I fixed the problem. Why the electronic rear derailleur didn’t work was pretty fast clear. My shift handle slipped a bit down and so the contact broke. I plugged it in again and everything worked well. During this time the first larger pursuit group passed me and I just joined in the next one. From that time on it didn’t make sense to ride alone, because you had completed nearly the most altitude meters and you had to fight on the final kilometers against a headwind. So I finished the race with this group and got overall 14th and 6th in my category. The only pity was that we/I had the top group in sight when I had the shifting problems. Otherwise the event was great like every year.
